Come Enter by the Narrow Gate

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that lead to life, and those who find it are few (Matthew 7:13-14).

Narrow Door

1.   Come, enter by the narrow gate
           Though difficult the way,
         For only this way leads to life;
           O seek this gate today!

2.   All those who walk this path are known
           By holiness and love,
For they have laid aside the world
           To journey up above.

3.   For broad the gate that leads to death,
           Destruction's path is wide,
And many like to roam its course,
           The rules there, they decide.

4.   They love to wander, romp, and play
           In unrestricted plains,
       All blindly blissful, unaware
           Of sin's dark lengthy chains.

5.   The gate is narrow unto life
And those who find it, few,
For there was once indeed a day
When just eight souls passed through.

6.   Come seek the gate that leads to life
While it may yet be found!
For soon the door will close once more
           To judgement's trumpet sound.

7.   Come now and lay before the cross
          The burden of your sin
And take the lighter yoke of Christ
          That you may enter in.

8.   Yes, enter by the narrow gate
           And come without delay.
       Repent, believe in Jesus Christ,
The Truth, the Life, the Way.

"Come Enter by the Narrow Gate"
WORDS: Ken Puls, August 21, 1992
MUSIC: Lowell Mason, 1832
TUNE: DOWNS (C.M.)
THEME: The Way of Salvation

This hymn was the fruit of my meditation on a message preached on August 16, 1992 at Heritage Baptist Church in Mansfield, Texas. Pastor Fred Malone spoke that morning on the text Matthew 7:13-14. His sermon was titled: "Enter by the Narrow Gate." Other references and allusions to Scripture in the hymn include: Matthew 11:28-30, John 14:16 and the account of Noah and the ark (Genesis 6-8).
