\nThat we may know His will,
\nAnd trust each day His providence

\nThe secret things belong to God;

How vain the questions in my heart
\nTo know what lies ahead,
\nWhen I neglect to read His Word
\nAnd know not what He said.
\nI need not look beyond His Word
\nTo know His will for me;
\nIf I but walk within its light
\nMy path I’ll plainly see.<\/p>\n

Our God has purposed and designed
\nEach moment of each day,
\nAnd though we rise and make our plans
\n‘Tis He directs our way.
\nThus we should say when we arise:
\n“Lord-willing I shall stand.”
\nFor we, except His Word reveals,
\nKnow not what He has planned.<\/p>\n

For who can search the mind of God,
\nKnow what tomorrow brings?
\nAnd who can grasp His providence
\nTo understand all things?
\nOur future rests within God’s hands
\nAnd we must leave it there;
\nContent to walk each day by faith

\nSufficient that we know His Word
\nTo walk obediently.
\nWhere He has spoken, Let us hear,
\nUpon His Word we stand.

This hymn is a reminder that God’s Word is sufficient for us to know His will for us. We “do not know what the future will bring” and so we must learn to say “if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:13\u201317). “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29). We do not know what the future holds, but we can trust God in His providence and walk in obedience to His Word.<\/p>\n

I wrote the hymn during a time of uncertainty. I had graduated from seminary, but was still searching for full time employment in teaching or ministry. I needed to preach truth to myself and rest\u00a0in God’s providence. In an interesting turn of providence, in the same month I wrote the hymn (July 2000), I also began training to develop online courses and teach as an online instructor at Dallas Baptist University. I later used the knowledge from that training\u00a0to develop the Founders Study Center<\/a> when God gave me a full time job with Founders Ministries in 2003. God is good in all He provides.<\/p>\n
