This past Sunday\u00a0Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral<\/a>, Florida celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Dr. Tom Ascol serving as pastor. I have had the privilege of serving with Tom and leading music at Grace since 2003. As part of the celebration I wrote\u00a0a new song \u00a0with the help of Becca Sissons entitled “No Greater Passion.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0chorus<\/strong> of the song has words very familiar to our church family. Pastor Tom has taught us to remember that the gospel\u00a0is all about Jesus: “Who He is, what He’s done, and why it matters.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0idea for the verses<\/strong>\u00a0came from another pastor, whose words Tom borrowed as an encouragement to our church. Inspired by Spurgeon’s first words at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, these were the first words that Pastor Tom spoke from the\u00a0pulpit\u00a0when we began meeting in our new building on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012:<\/p>\n

This building has been prepared to serve the advance of the gospel here in Southwest Florida and around the world. Because of that I propose that the theme of all the preaching and teaching that will come from this platform shall be the person and work of Jesus Christ. We believe many things in this church. We love the law of God and delight in it because it is not only right but it is good. We love the great doctrines that are revealed in the Bible, especially those wonderful doctrines of God\u2019s sovereign grace in salvation. But if asked what is our creed our answer must now and forever be, \u201cJesus Christ and Him crucified.\u201d The one message that we have to proclaim to our community is simply this: \u201cJesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.\u201d His life, death and resurrection is our joy and our passion.<\/p>\n

No Greater Passion<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor I decided to know nothing among you except
\nJesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).<\/p>\n

We have no greater passion,
\nNo greater joy we own;
\nNo other cause so great unites us
\nThan making Jesus known.
\nWe have one simple message
\nThat Jesus came to save;
\nTo rescue dead and helpless sinners,
\nHis life He freely gave.<\/p>\n

Let our lives and our lips
\nDeclare the gospel.
\nAll praise to Christ we give!
\nWho He is, what He\u2019s done,
\nAnd why it matters,
\nHe\u2019s the reason that we live.<\/p>\n

We have no other answer,
\nWhen asked about our creed.
\nIt\u2019s Christ alone, His love compels us
\nTo reach a world in need.
\nWe have a great commission
\nTo preach His Word to all,
\nAt home, abroad and to hard places,
\nWherever He may call.<\/p>\n

Let our lives and our lips
\nDeclare the gospel.
\nAll praise to Christ we give!
\nWho He is, what He\u2019s done,
\nAnd why it matters,
\nHe\u2019s the reason that we live.<\/p>\n

We have no other refuge;
\n\u201cTo whom Lord shall we go?\u201d
\nIn You alone is life eternal,
\nNo other hope we know.
\nWe have one sure foundation
\nThat can\u2019t be overthrown.
\nWe\u2019re anchored firm in Christ our Savior,
\nOur Rock, our Cornerstone.<\/p>\n

Let our lives and our lips
\nDeclare the gospel.
\nAll praise to Christ we give!
\nWho He is, what He\u2019s done,
\nAnd why it matters,
\nHe\u2019s the reason that we live.<\/p>\n
