A Morning of Joy!
"“For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.”
(Psalm 30:5)

1. A morning of joy!
Our Savior lives!
And unto His own new life He gives.
Praise to the God of our salvation;
Christ, our Lord, has conquer’d death!
2. A morning of joy!
Our Savior reigns!
He’s bought our freedom, broken our chains.
Praise to the God of all creation;
Christ, our Lord, is Sov’reign King!
3. A morning of joy!
An empty grave!
Our risen Savior has pow’r to save.
Praise to the God of our redemption;
Christ, our Lord, our greatest joy!
"A Morning of Joy!"

TUNE: CELEST (9.9.9.7.)
THEME: The Resurrection of Christ
I wrote “A Morning of Joy!” in March 1986, in anticipation of the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on the Lord’s Day, March 30th. The tune was named for my wife, Celest, and composed especially for the text and based on a harmonization of J.S. Bach’s “Jesu’ Joy of Man’s Desiring.” I fashioned the tune so that Bach’s music could be played at the same time as counterpoint. In this way the tune could be introduced as an instrumental prelude or offertory before the singing of the text. This was the first of my hymns that I was able to notate on a computer. I used a music composition program installed on a Macintosh Plus and made copies of the hymn for the service on Easter Sunday, March 30, 1986. The hymn was included in two early collections of my hymns: Sovereign Grace Hymns (1987), words only, and Hymns of Grace (1998), both words and music.
