Gathered Now We Come to Worship
For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and
ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. (2 Corinthians 4:5)
1. Gathered now, we come to worship,
Hearts united, singing praise!
We would look to Jesus only,
Letting none distract our gaze.
May we offer music fitting
For the worship of our King.
Let us foremost seek His pleasure
As our voices join to sing.
2. We come not for entertainment,
Not for outward pomp and show.
Our hearts hunger for the Scriptures;
More of Jesus we would know!
In our prayers and conversations,
In the worship that we bring,
Christ must occupy the center,
Glorified in everything.
3. Lord, we pray now through the preaching,
You would make the Savior known.
May Your messenger diminish
That we might see Christ alone.
We come not to hear man's wisdom;
Man's advice we do not need.
Lead us to lush, verdant Scripture—
There, on Jesus, let us feed!

TUNE: AUSTRIAN HYMN (8.7.8.7.D.)
THEME: A Call to Worship Christ Alone
This hymn is a meditation on 2 Corinthians 4:5 "For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake." It was written while traveling to the 1999 Southern Baptist Founders Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. It is an exhortation to the church (verses 1 and 2) and a prayer for the preaching of the Word (verse 3) that we keep our focus on Christ and not ourselves.
